If you're in the Los Angeles area, most of the libraries I've been in have decent collections of graphic novels. They're often stuck in the kids or young adult sections, but they're their.

I decided to buy the slipcase set (I had been reading through the first 4 volumes or so of the collection in a Borders and never bought the books, so I know I like the world - no wonder they went out of business), the Death Deluxe edition, Dream Hunters, and Endless Nights. Unfortunately, I've received everything except the actual 10 volume slipcase - can I go ahead and read some of the other three books without spoiling much, or will I be spoiling the remaining story of the main slipcase too much?

Those ancillary books will not make a lot of sense without reading the main 10 first, I can promise that. Any chance of borrowing just book 1 until they show up? It also doesn't take too long to read, hopefully you may get it by Friday!

So, we're sticking to what's there in the basic trade paperbacks? I really don't know what sort of extra material might be in the hardcovers, but there aren't any of Neil's notes or minor back-up stories I might miss?

I only have the first two trades, but I'm sure I'll be able to access the other ones when I need to.

For me, the story is the thing. As a Gaiman fan in general, the notes and such are great, but the story is rich and deep and wonderful without them.

Eh, don't know. Actually I do have some exams coming up and should at least pretend to study for them, so I may need to miss out on the first weekend or two anyway. if I show up here it's because I'm procrastinating...

I'm hopeful that folks who have the annotated editions will share some thoughts from them when relevant. But I know they're not for everyone (very bulky for me, I carry my reading on my back all over downtown).

While I own the complete run of the original series (I must have enjoyed it back then, since I pretty much stopped collecting comics when the series ended), I now have all the collections on Comixology for my iPad too. Much easier to deal with, considering I have three cats that tend to want to help me read.

While I'm not happy with Comixology's DRM (which doesn't allow sharing, though judging from recent customer surveys that may be coming), there's no denying their app is by far the best digital comic reading experience I've seen. The artwork in Sandman looks great. All ten volumes plus the various additional collections are available.

I've been thinking about getting an app for Comics, but I agree with you about DRM...hmm.

The bottom line is, at least for now, you're not going to get DC or Marvel (at least) without DRM. To their credit, Image and now Top Shelf have DRM-free digital stores, but reading them on mobile doesn't come close to Comixology's experience yet. I'm supporting them though, because I think trusting their readers needs to be encouraged.

If you're in the Portland area, last time I checked the Multnomah County Library had all the books, though you might get wait listed. I would also be willing to lend my copies out, though I'll be using them also so you would probably be a week behind so that would suck. D'oh!

Hmm, seems the Volume I on Comixology is missing a pair of pages in issue 2. The standalone issue there is fine, though.

DC hasn't been doing the best quality control on their digital conversions.

There are two great references that I often go back to when reading The Sandman:
The Sandman Companion by Hy Bender - out of print but a great book with many interviews with Neil and good reflections by Hy. Can be found on eBay.
Annotated Sandman vol 1 & 2 by Leslie Klinger - very detailed page by page, panel by panel references.

Vertigo just announced that the much delayed "The Annotated Sandman Vol. 3" by Leslie Klinger will be released October 22. It will cover issues #40-55 of THE SANDMAN, along with THE SANDMAN SPECIAL #1 and “How They Met Themselves” from VERTIGO: WINTER’S EDGE #3. I cannot wait to get this. I learned so much from the first two volumes.  Then the wait for the final volume...

If you're in Edmonton, the TPBs are available through the Edmonton Public Library (EPL) system. You can check availability or reserve copies online.  However, availability seems to run anywhere from 2-8 copies depending on which book you wish to check out.

Figuring
stuff out on my own is more rewarding than reading someone else's
annotated notes - even if it includes author interviews. But having an
intelligent group to listen to, to consider different POV, is very
wonderful.
