Two brand new songs on video, and a livestream today

edited February 2022 in Sandman Book Club
Hello, my friends -- it's a new Saturday, and I have some things to share with you.

There's a Northside Open Mic livestream today on Bandcamp -- 1pm Pacific / 4pm Eastern, or viewable for 24 hours after -- let me know if you'd like to attend for free, I'll add your email to the virtual door list. I've been learning palm muting and strumming patterns, so I'm trying to play a few more songs that ROCK. It's a little clumsy, but I'm so ready.

(After that, at 4pm Pacific / 7pm Eastern, The Doubleclicks are playing a benefit for trans youth in Texas. I have my ticket. Making a day of it!)

I've also made a new video, for patrons and donors only this time, in a new format I'm trying. It has the debuts of two songs in it, one you might've heard on the livestream, "Icebergs," and the other I finished writing just a couple days ago, "Steady On":

I was tryin' to tell you, but you froze --
That's ok, 'cause I know you know...
Don't apologize for not knowing how
to do what we're all doing now;
just keep your nose above the waterline.
Whatever it takes, that's fine.

"Icebergs" is about zoom calls. It's a little meditation on where we're all at right now, including me as an artist, deciding what to share right now -- what's visible above water, what's hidden below.

And I dropped my heart to see if it would break like it's supposed to,
Like I hear the human heart is bound to do when it encounters gravity.
And it seems you're made of concrete, so you've really been quite helpful
with my process; here's a thank you note for all the self-discovery and wine.
Yet here you've got me posturing,
like a bird that's found a shiny thing,
like a bird that's found a shiny thing,
and if you leave me dangling...

"Steady On" is a goofy little ditty that I wrote when I wondered what would happen if I wrote poem with lines 17 iambs long, because I nerd out about syllables.

This is also sort of a vlog, I have a lot to say directly to you guys in this video -- about music, about connection and vulnerability, about my next record (I started laying out the pieces of it this week! It was a poetry shard explosion!).

These are brand new vulnerable little scratch tracks. Which is scary, but I hope it's why you're here! I got some new gear to record this, and I think I need a bit more (help how do guitars work), but I'm finally feeling enthusiastic about making more films, even though my guitar work is still in its infancy. This format was much better for me.

I hope you'll dip into this little mini-concert of a couple songs, and I hope you'll let me know what you think of the new ones.

(I took one of my typewriters on a creative retreat this week, and together we did so. much. poetry.)

P.S. If you want to revisit any of my older Northside Open Mic concerts, as well as a few with accompanists, you can find all the full-length shows in this dropbox here!

P.P.S. It was really sunny this week. Here's the view from the bridge. Alaska says hello!

P.P.P.S. I got myself flowers for my birthday and I just realized I want to share them with you.
