Online Tea Event - March 8th RSVP list

edited March 2014 in Sandman Book Club
Here is the list for signing up for the March 8th Tea Party test event.
Please keep this to sign-ups only.
If you have any questions, please ask them here:

This is not the 'big event' talked about at the start of this group. It's more of a test to see what is practical.

  • RSVP for one!
  • I'm in
  • Count me in!
  • Why not. I'm in.
  • If you need another, i'm game.
  • Looks like you're full, but if someone drops out, I'm in!
  • I've only just found out I would be free for this, but you probably already have enough for a test run. Can you queue me up as second substitute after @Sus, please? :-)
  • If you are not in the principal group, don't worry, I'm sure we can rotate out!  And I would actually love some folks present who are not in the video chat the entire time.  That would help us know how we can interact thru chat and so on with people watching but not on video.  So if you don't mind still attending, and perhaps switching in and out with us at some point, maybe we could experiment with that?
  • I meant to start some emails with you guys about this today, but it's 2am and I"m still answering email, so it might have to be tomorrow (yawn).  Morningtime.
  • Yes, I'm happy to be present whether on video or not. I can lurk like the best of them! :-)
  • It sounds like there's a full house already. If I can't sit at the table I'll take a seat as an alternate if that option is available.
  • Ooops. Change that. We're going to the movies (Grand Budapest Hotel) tomorrow. I'll catch the next round. Have a great time, y'all.
  • OH GODS I'm sorry, I'm an idiot!  I've double-booked myself!  Crap!

I will have to move the event one hour later.  I'm very sorry, I have a photo shoot in the morning, and for some reason my internet-world-schedule and my Real-Life-Walking-Around-schedule never overlapped in my head.

So, new time is noon in Alaska, 1pm Pacific, 4pm Eastern, 9pm Europe!  I'm very sorry, I hope it doesn't mess anyone up too much!  Changing it on the Google event as well.  I'll try to be logging in by about 10 minutes before, in a rush, with makeup on.
  • Again, ******NEW TIME***** one hour later, 1pm PST / 4pm EST etc.

    Sorry about that!
  • P.S. Planning to actually be in the video hangout?  RSVP on this page, it will make adding you to the hangout much much easier on my end, turns out, if you're already in the guest list with your preferred Google-related address:

  • Here! Sorry to be late guys!
  • That was SO MUCH FUN!
  • Agreed!! Thanks so much for hosting, looking forward to the next one. :D
  • Thank you guys so much for joining me!  I wasn't sure how that would go, and at first it was a bit dodgy, but I think we definitely hit a stride by the end.  Excellent!

You are all welcome to initiate and hold your own such hangouts of course, encouraged in fact.

For my part, I start traveling again soon, so I'll likely do one when I get back from the road and stick to text input until then.

A million times thank you though!

    Marian
  • For the time I was in I had a blast. Can't wait for the next one!
  • I greatly enjoyed the discussion.  Felt a little inspired and ripped off ~400 words in a story I'm working on.  First time I've worked on it in months.

Let me start by saying I was not entirely happy with how the comic pages ended up working out - it was too slow and distracting to change the pages live, but I am curious if everyone liked having them for a reference and is it something worth improving on, or was it fun once and the idea should be dropped?

Having a separate channel for support seemed to really help this time, I'm going to continue that idea. I'm still newish to google hangouts though, so I'm curious if anyone tried to join and was unable to do so.

  • i kept getting intermittent lags in video and audio, and i muted my own mike most of the time to make sure i wasn't contributing to any echoes or anything. I wonder if skype would be a better choice in terms of performance, though I don't know if it allows recording and uploading to youtube as easily as hangouts do
  • I enjoyed the discussion. I think it worked well, and we had a good number of people on video call at the same time. I did lose video once for around 30 seconds, but the audio continued, so didn't affect me much.

@Daniel, I think it can be useful to have pages available if discussing imagery, but I can see how it is awkward/distracting for the one charged with finding the appropriate page!

See you all next time... :-)
  • @daniel I liked the idea, although having your little head in the corner was kind of funny!  I liked it, but it was on the odd side.

What if you used a normal webcam image of your face, then switched to screensharing the comic pages when we are talking about a specific page and it's appropriate?  Or possibly having them on a different (support?) account?  Switching back and forth from screenshare has served me well in the past.

That might mean that someone takes a slightly secretarial role, looking up specific pages, but it's also something the chat might be handy for -- i.e. if you plan to talk about a specific event or page, post it in the chat, giving the person with the Comixology hookup some time to find it and screenshare it.
  • I fail at everything and missed it! Sounds like it worked out well, though? Awesome.

@nerd We looked into Skype as a gHangout equivalent for #MuchAdoConference last year, and it turned out you can have a group of peeps on voice chat for free, but for group video chat, you need a "premium" account. :(
