Need forum tech support?

edited February 2014 in Forum Support
Hello there, oh brave and intrepid adventurer. Hopefully there won't be too many bumps but we're pretty new to this forum so if you have any major issues, please let Marian (@mariancall) or me (@alaskarobotics) know and we'll see what we can do to patch it up.

Peace, love and burritos as big as a baby.

  • Thanks, Pat!
  • I just thought there was going to be tea, but if there are burritos, I'm doubly in. :)
  • I wish I could 'like' that comment, Inkycats. Ooooh Facebook has trained me too well.
  • My instinct these days is to +1 everything... that sort of stuff is going to be very telling in the next few years. :)
  • True 'dat, Gord.
  • +1 to all earthlings.
  • +1 to all Endless, too - Just in case any of them are watching.
  • -1 Muahahhhah!
  • I see your -1, and divide by -i^(1/2)
  • Damn it, nerdsniped.

By my calculations that would be ±sqrt(2)/(1-i).
  • Hi Pat, nice to meet you. Pardon me asking a silly question, but I can't seem to locate a "Log Out" button. Aside from quitting my browser, where do I do that here?
  • In the upper left, you should see a 'gear' icon below your name. Click on the 'gear' and there should be a "Sign Out" option.

Let me know if this isn't working for you.
  • Very subtle. Found it, thank you Daniel.

Yeah, that gear button is where all the fun stuff hides.

    Testing edit/comment.
  • Cool, changing my user name Just Works™. Never liked lower case with underscores anyway.
  • Test accents etc à été l'ôpitale

    Test emoji
  • Test accents etc: à été l'ôpitale. Danke schön. Lech Wałęnsa.

Hmm, accents seem to work but emoji is broken in the preview and if you try to post them it is apt to put in a spurious /div> and discard the rest of the post.

Not a huge deal but I thought I should let you know.
  • Actually, it might be a bigger deal than I first thought if the input isn't being sanitised properly. http://xkcd.com/327/ and all that.
  • Oh dear, that's bad. I was able to edit the latest comment by @patrace to add "Testing edit/comment".

I think we should only be able to edit our own comments.
  • I want burritos now, too....
  • Unfortunately, there's a limitation to the design of Vanilla permission categories there. I'm going to chose to call it a "bug" though.

Still, hopefully everyone will just play nice.

@Daniel Wow, that's a pretty major limitation/bug. You might want to escalate it. :)

    Edit: test editing own post.
  • Yeah, that's a problem. On it.
  • That does seem really severe. How are we set up?

I'm a member of the PAX Enforcer forum (which also uses Vanilla), and we're setup to only allow editing our own posts.
  • I think it was a planning error - I've sent some suggestions and I think it'll be fixed shortly.
  • @patrace Useless human.
  • Talk further sister? There is no need. He is returning to Hell.
  • Ok, think I fixed it, looks like some permissions were set wonky. Let me know if that's working any better.
  • @patrace Looks like you've got it. I can edit my own posts but the gear wheel no longer appears when mousing over other people's posts.
  • Thanks for bringing that to our attention Richard... And for not editing more of my posts!
  • Yeah, my bad, I made that mistake yesterday. Vanilla's dashboard is utterly unclear as to what "edit" and "delete" mean in different role permissions. I hit the wrong "edit" permission for Donors' Circle users, thinking it would let them fix their own posts.
  • Looks like we passed the test. You gave us power and we didn't use it for evil.
  • or did we? ;)
  • Not really a technical problem but is there a way I can view the rest of the forum and not just the DC?
  • Nice site(.) It might be useful to have a reply button on comments. I always find that it facilitates discussions.
  • @Lee You can see the rest of the forum by clicking on "Categories", under the "New Discussion" button. Or you can use this direct link: http://mariancall.com/vanilla/categories
  • It looks like I can edit comments within threads in the Call Center: Public Marian Call Discussions category/forum whatever they're called in this software
  • @bob_meyers This is just personal opinion: I thought the same thing when i had joined a different discussion group. However, I found over time that it actually helped discussion, by encouraging people to read every post. And by taking the time to address the person or statement directly, it lead to a more active discussion.

Having said that, there is plug-in software for vanilla that adds that option, and it will probably show up one day. (Vanilla was updated recently, and plug-in updating and testing is still being done.)
  • @nerd Thanks for catching that, it should be fixed now.
  • @patrace No worries, and glad it was easily fixed.

There's a running gag among my Twitter feed:
    A good QA tester:
    • Walks into a bar.
    • Runs into the bar.
    • Walks into the bar and immediately walks back out and in again.
    • Climbs in through the window of the bar.
    • Vaults over the bar and tries to start serving drinks for free.

Haven't managed to break anything else yet apart from the emoji support.
  • @daniel The Categories link only lists the threads in DC into catagories. For example, where's the Sandman thread.
  • @Lee Donor's Circle members that are new forum users are blocked from seeing the Sandman groups, so that it's not overwhelming and hiding all the Donor's Circle content in a bunch of "noise".
  • @Lee I'll start a thread for anyone who wants to also view Sandman material. There's such a huge cascade of it, it's overwhelming for someone who's not in for the full forum experience. But it is fantastic reading!

  • Hi helpers, this isn't exactly forum, but it is Marian Call tech ... I got the new mp3s from Dropbox and I can't seem to make iTunes recognize, play, or add them to my library. I remember having this problem last time around when Donors' Circle was just starting to move ... but I managed to get the one I really wanted to work so I forgot about it. Now I'm stuck-er. Any ideas, or is it likely just a system glitch on my end and I should keep troubleshooting myself?
I'm on a PC, running Windows 7 Home Premium, iTunes 11.2.2.3. My iTunes&system drive has a gig or so of free space, but not much. My music directory has tons of space.
    Thanks for your thoughts!
    -Alice
  • Forgive me if you've already done these steps - I'm going to take a guess on the error.

Did you download the files from the dropbox as a .zip file? If so, windows will automatically show you the contents of the zip file, but it doesn't automatically extract the files.

Go to the downloads folder, find the .zip file, right-click on it and select "Extract".

This will start a wizard to extract the files to a folder - And then from that folder you can drag them into itunes.

This is just a brief set of instructions, let me know if I'm on the right track with this, and I can give you more detail if needed.
  • Ah! Thanks, Daniel!
Although this wasn't the problem, it solved the problem. I tried what poking at the files as you said, but my files were not unextracted. They were, however, somehow corrupted by the way I downloaded them -- so I downloaded the .zip instead and extracted it. Ta-da! No more problems.
    Loving the new tunes!
  • Updated to 2.1.6 if there are problems, let me know (@alaskarobotics)
  • Updated to 2021.008 and migrated to vanilla.mariancall.com. Feels like there are going to be some bumpy bits but we've stepped up a bit from not-working-at-all status. Also the main site seems to be down for some users because of a DNS issue. We're working on it.
  • Testing image upload.
  • I'm getting 173.236.225.74 and 2607:f298:5:111b::dd:e76c: for mariancall.com, going to dreamhost, but that page is an under construction page.

What might be a little bit more critical - there's no current MX record for mariancall.com - so email won't route.
